Many of us have decided to follow Jesus – perhaps a long time ago – but never actually followed him anywhere. No movement has ever taken place. The call ‘Follow me’ required movement, action. Not just accepting Jesus into our hearts and then going on about our business as usual but actually hearing the call of God and responding. Jesus is on the move and the invitation is there to join him.
Following comes at a cost. Those first disciples left their fishing nets to follow. They left what was familiar to them, their livelihoods, their security and trusted Jesus. The same call is there to us. It’s not about quitting your job but it’s a change of mindset. To trust in our own ways of living or to respond to the call and trust His.
With Jesus, what he asks you to do, he also equips you to do. Notice how the call is ‘Follow me and I will make you’. Not ‘follow me and try really hard at making yourselves.’ It is in following Jesus and participating with the work the Holy Spirit wants to do in us that we find our identity, purpose, security and walk in the fullest sense of our destiny.
Jesus takes these fishermen and promises to make them fishers of men. He takes what you think you should be doing and through the power of the Holy Spirit equips and releases you to walk in the fullness of who God made you to be. He takes ordinary people and uses them to change the world.
This is the offer. ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men’. It’s a simple calling. Not an easy one but a simple one. But it comes at a cost, to leave your nets and follow/trust Him completely. It can take us anywhere or look like anything but it’s an incredible ride.
It is the ultimate offer of a life of adventure and meaning. So what are you waiting for?
